Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers is one of the biggest toy licenses out there, and in case you have not been paying attention, that is how it has been for a very long time. Even if Power Rangers is not your biggest bag, it is a phenomenally successful brand, and the supporting toy lines that have come with every new iteration of the property have been ubiquitous on store shelves for decades. Well, now the Imaginext crew gets to take a stab at making a desirable property even more fun and toy-etic, and their MASSIVE Morphin’ Megazord is about as impressive as gets.
Batman and the rest of the DC crew is a pretty big property for Imaginext to explore, but let’s face it, if we are talking about popular kid properties, Power Rangers is going to give everyone a run for their money in terms of popularity. The character designs and vehicles are all primed to be translated to plastic, and the stories have a lot of saturated media support and tie-in, so access to the attention of kids is almost built in. So, when you tie that to the style and playability of Imanginext, you pretty much have a match made in heaven, and you can tell that the team at Fisher-Price are already going nuts with design and play concepts.
Now, I realize that starting off our coverage of this line with the gigantic Morphin’ Megazord almost seems like going backwards, but if you jump in with this behemoth, you can build an entire collection around it. I thought the Super Friends Batcave was an impressive set in terms of playability and sheer stature, but then I saw this . . . I realize that there is traditional naming going on here, but the MEGAzord is absolutely just that – mega. This thing stands almost as tall as my kid, and there are play features built into every level of the set. These, of course, are activated by the traditional Imaginext dials and spring-loaded weaponry, but like the all of their sets, they have been able to integrate all of these features pretty seamlessly into the Power Rangers theme.
So, if you are not familiar with the whole concept of a Megazord, it is essentially one giant robot/vehicle that is made up of a lot of other vehicles. Do you know Voltron? Think Voltron. Anyway, this set is the giant robot version of all of the combined parts, and it makes for one giant and fairly intricate playset. You can see the designs of the smaller vehicles come out in this set, and the triceratops and sabretooth tiger cues in the legs are the most apparent, but this is one giant set, and while there are a lot of moving parts, it does not transform. Frankly, I don’t think that takes anything away from the set itself, and if you stay tuned for subsequent installments, you will see that the Imaginext team has you covered.
There are plenty of Turn and Push Power Pads throughout the play set, and the action and hidden compartments are integrated into just about every appendage. There are several cannons that can launch darts, and the yellow foot opens as a trap to catch unknowing foes. The head also serves as the “central command,” and like the top of the Bat Cave, the eyes light up when it is turned. The arms are fully posable and the hands feature a spring grip so the Megazord can grasp a variety of things.
The chest is, of course, the most impressive portion of the figure and it opens from the center, revealing the launcher that can send the six included disks flying. Each disk is adorned with the likeness of an animal that makes up the Megazord, and they get pretty good distance when fired, so you can go nuts.
Now, all of the different Rangers are already available for this line, but this set includes the Red and Black. It is nice that you get some figures with this giant set, but you are going to need at least the entire team to help fill out all of the places in this set. These are, of course, perfectly rendered in the Imanginext style, so any figure from any other Imaginext line will fit right in with them, as well as the Megazord.
Power Rangers fans, these might be some of the best toys for this property this side of the Pacific. The figures are fun as usual, and the Megazord is really impressive, even dwarfing the Bat Cave. Kids and Ranger fans of all ages will be sure to dig this, and the good news is that it is already available at all major retail outlets. Don’t let this one slip by for Morphin’ Time!
