Oo-Larr is the exclusive figure for the 2015 Masters of the Universe Classics Club Eternia subscription. The name Oo-Larr is new, but this “jungle” He-Man variant is steeped in the history of the Masters of the Universe from his appearance in early mini-comics. Let’s take a closer look at Oo-Larr!
Oo-Larr® Bio
Real Name: Oo-Larr®, Lord of the Jungle Tribe
The last person to be known as “The He-Man” before Prince Adam was born was Oo-Larr of the Jungle Tribe. He left his kinsmen seeking adventure and excitement outside of the Vine Jungle. Coming across the Goddess, he rescued her and was recruited to help protect the two halves of the Power Sword of He. The corodite Power Vest which the Goddess gave to Oo-Larr was so well engineered that it was also eventually passed down to Prince Adam too. Oo-Larr’s final quest was to unite both halves of the Sword so that the Sorceress could clone it for the second twin of destiny. Oo-Larr then separated the original sword again, hiding both halves on opposite sides of the planet while the Sorceress and Light Hope watched over the clone sword in Grayskull. Oo-Larr bravely fights to protect the secret of the sword of He.
I’m a fan of the idea and the attempt to merge all the various MOTU continuities into one with the bios, so I don’t have the issue with this bio that most people have. I’ve been influenced equally by Filmation and the mini-comics and I really don’t see a good way to integrate those portrayals, so two different guys work for me.
All that said, this figure works really well as just an “Alcala” He-Man to me, like the old Star Wars line had a “McQuarrie” sub-line. The name is…well it’s a name. The title, “Lord of the Jungle” is a kinda cool nod to He-Man’s Tarzan-like appearance and his pulp fiction roots.
Oo-Larr comes with some good stuff including a spear, a sword and an alternate head sculpt. In a weird mix-up, a very savage looking axe was packed in with this month’s subscription figure, Huntara, but it’s clearly meant to go with Oo-Larr here.
The spear and axe have a nice sharp sculpt with good wood grain and dinged metal detail. They are cast in solid plastic and hold their shape well. The sword is a pretty basic sword and the blade is pretty thin, so mine was slightly warped by the packaging, but I was able to straighten it out. I’m always up for more weapons.
The alternate head sculpt is closer to the original toy head sculpt and seems to be a big deal to a lot of fans, but it’s not really my thing. I actually prefer the original MOTUC head more.
This variant head is a great sculpt and definitely does what it’s supposed to. I was trying to figure out why I don’t care and I’m thinking it’s probably because I was never that into the vintage He-Man figure himself as much as the villains and his more colorful allies like Man-At-Arms, Teela, Stratos, Man-E-Faces and Ram Man.
Sculpt of course is killer, they capture the vintage figure feel for the alternate head and the Alcala style for the other head. There are a couple new parts with bare forearms and feet that work pretty well but the forearm transition to the hands is a little clunky and could be smoother, but it’s overall really nice.
Standard MOTUC articulation is only hindered slightly at the neck by the longer hair. The rocker ankles also have very little give to them.
Paint is crisp and clean, what little of it there is. The alternate head in particular seems to be a glossier plastic that could use a spray of dull-cote, but it matches pretty well with other He-Man figures (save the paler Thunder Punch).
Overall
This is a great sub exclusive variant as it’s a pretty obscure and fan-friendly variant. Judging from some of the online reaction, Mattel would do well to throw this head in with future MOTUC He-Man variants because I’m reading a lot of “I want to replace all the heads on my He-Men with this one” talk online.
I particularly like the figure because it does a good job at paying tribute to the excellent art work of Alfredo Alcala on those original comics.
