The Kenner homage Predator Series 13 is hitting right now and they are niiiiice.
Let me start by saying that I’m not a completist when it comes to the Predator line. I have one movie figure and that’s it. I’m more down for the oddball figures. Big Red and the like. I’m also a big fan of NECA’s retro gaming figures. While Renegade and Scavage aren’t in the retro style with the 8-bit paint jobs, I still lump them in since they are an homage to the Kenner figures from the 90s. Nostalgia is my weakness.
Also, there is a third figure in this assortment, Cracked Tusk. DisThunder will handle that review later in the week.
First up, here’s Scavage, my favorite of the three from an appearance standpoint.
Now, I said appearance. I love the look of this guy. Just a walking pile of ugly, and it looks awesome. THe dark green is striking, the red dreads and silver armor a nice contrast. The helmet comes off insectoid. And when I say “comes off” I mean it.
Like I said, pile of ugly. I kind of wish the inside of the mouth was a blood red, it would tie into the dreads nicely. The mask slips down between his mandibles and is held securely in place.
But, again, I said appearance. As much as I dig the look, the playability is hindered. His hips are a v-crotch type swivel and his shoulders are restricted by the armor. I go into all of that in my video review.
Scale-wise he fits right in with all the other Predators and looks great with Dutch.
Scavage rocks any scene you put him into though, even with less limb movement.
The staff is pure badassery, almost chrome and sporting a human skull and what I’m guessing is an alien tail. The wrist blades don’t extend but are brutal looking on their own.
What Scavage lacks in playability, Renegade more than makes up for it.
As odd as it will sound, Renegade is my other favorite, just for different reasons. I like the colors, again green but with a transition between lights and darks and a more muted look. But he has such presence with his superior articulation scheme when compared to Scavage.
And again, he looks great with Dutch.
He comes armed with a pistol, a shoulder cannon, and a crazy blade weapon. Here, the wrist blades do extend.
I know the words here are short and sweet, but I ramble on a lot more in the video. Basically I’m saying that these two figure are awesome in their own ways. Awesome on the shelf, awesome in environments.
