The LEGO Exo Suit is part of LEGO’s new Ideas initiative in which LEGO maniacs can build and design an idea, submit it and then have it voted on. If you get enough votes from your peers the LEGO review board will make a final decision as to whether or not your IDEA makes it to market. The Exo Suit was submitted and won! I ordered one for my son to build, and of course so I could play with the set, take pictures of it and write a review.
The Exo Suit is a fully posable mech that a LEGO mini figure can pilot. The set comes with 2 mini figures, a male and female dressed in the classic (when I was kid classic) Space suits. For those of you a bit younger than me you’ll remember Benny from the LEGO movie, well those are the space LEGO’s that I grew up with. Only Pete and Yve from the Exo Suit set are green and not blue, but they do sport the classic space logo. My first exposure to the kit was through this video:
I’ll be honest one of the reasons that I bought the kit is that I know my son is a huge fan of the Titanfall mechs and I thought it channeled the power loader in Aliens. Some sort of LEGO moment was building in my head and I know before long there will be some amazing play in this suit’s future.
My 10 year old was able to build the set in a couple of hours, it wasn’t too much of an effort. Well, that’s a lie; he really wanted someone else to build it so he could play with it, but the family decided he should build it on his own as we thought he would appreciate it more. I’m not certain how well that worked out, but we got satisfaction from his pride in completing the kit. There were some minor adjustments needed during the build as the all too classic LEGO fatigue set in and parts were lost, forgotten, assembled upside down, you know, the usual. There might have been some cursing as certain bricks were being ornery. But nothing too complex that most 10 year olds can’t handle.
The Exo Suit is a ton of fun to play with. There is a ton of articulation packed into the figure and for the most part it’s a solid build. Some of the joints are a little wobbly, it might just be the one we got but the ankles are a bit loose, both the swivel for the rocker on the foot and the ball ankle. The rest seem to be pretty solid. With use of the ball knees and ball hips there is a ton of action in this figure and you can have fun posing the hell out of it. With the ball shoulders and elbows you can also strike some serious arm poses and the use of articulated fingers really knocks this out of the park.
The pilots sit snugly in the cockpit and they look great piloting the suit. I haven’t quite figured out how to get their hands to hold both controls but I’ll figure it out eventually. I’d seriously recommend that LEGO maniacs pick this set up and have fun with it. It’s a great piece for any science fiction setting and of course any space setting.
