Who knew I could get this excited about a dude in a suit?
But this isn’t just any dude. This is Coulson. Phil. Agent. Director. Son of Coul. The man responsible for getting The Avengers to put their differences aside and work as a team, even if it wasn’t his plan. Coulson is the average joe who we movie watchers can relate to, our eyes into the Marvel cinematic world. So yeah, I was excited when the Agents of SHIELD 3-pack was released, and even more excited when I saw he was up on Hong Kong eBay. It’s what drove me to pay probably too much for him but that’s okay. I am completely happy with this figure.
Basically, this is my favorite suit body I’ve ever bought. The lines are cut nicely and realistically. Proportions are good. Wrinkles are not overbearing and placed appropriately. Articulation is well done. It’s closest competition is the DCUC suited body and in my opinion, this body is superior.
Speaking of articulation, let’s get the big question out of the way. Yes. He does have an ab crunch. It’s really well hidden because of the suit jacket and tie but it’s there.
The suit jacket is a bit stiff but not as bad as what we saw with the capes and skirts from the Allfather wave. That along with the tie being a soft rubbery material means the ab crunch isn’t hindered even though it doesn’t have a huge amount of movement.
You can check out the full articulation scheme in my video review.
But this is Coulson we’re talking about, and the serious, stern head with sunglasses gives off a heavy Coulson vibe.
The close likeness is probably because most of his face is covered with his sunglasses. We’re not talking Hot Toys likeness but this is good for a mass market retail figure. The alternate head though…
It’s not as good a likeness but I don’t fault the sculpt. Squint your eyes and you can see the shapes are all there. Hell, if I made a wild guess I’d say that the pic above I dug up was used as reference. No, it’s the paint that makes it look off. The eyes are painted the wrong shape, the eyebrows too prominent, no shading, and no color in the lips. Maybe a paint job is in order in the future.
Then there is the Destroyer Gun.
Truthfully, this gun is great. It looks exactly like the movie version, all the little sculpted details pop. The orange paint is a nice addition. It looks like it’s powering up and ready for some demigod ass-kicking. Even better, the Coulson holds the gun perfectly. His right hand is sculpted in the usual gun holding shape and has a trigger finger. The left hand is slightly more open but still holds the second handle well while still looking natural when not holding anything. He holds other guns in his right hand too, like the night-night gun that comes with Fury in the 3-pack.
Sadly, a comparison shows something is amiss.
We need a new movie Nick Fury! This pic makes Coulson look small, but he’s not. It’s Fury who is too large. Even the head is large. So unfortunately you can’t display them together. Worse, we’re getting this same Fury with the Agents of SHIELD 3-pack.
Here’s a better comparison.
That’s better. Winter Soldier Stealth Cap is one of my favorite movie figures and Coulson completely works with him. Same height but skinnier, completely realistic.
But if you don’t do movie figures and prefer comic characters on your shelf, well, Coulson is now part of the Marvel comic universe. This figure works in that capacity too.
All in all, I am ecstatic about adding Agent Coulson to the shelf. Great, great figure. And even though I got this figure from eBay I’ll be getting a set of the Agents of SHIELD pack. I need a Maria Hill and the Coulson body is perfect suited fodder. Prof. X. Chameleon. J. Jonah Jameson. Other SHIELD agents. This figure is jackpot.
