Hasbro: Marvel Legends Jubilee Series NOW Cyclops

DSC06456 featured

It’s a Cyclops week and with good reason! Cyke, Scott Summers, the once great leader of the X-Men, is currently Marvel Comic’s lame-ass turkey. Yeah, you heard me. The once great leader of the X-Men is struggling to find relevance or an anchor in the Marvel Universe. Robo reviewed this figure for CollectionDX not too long ago, but it was time that Fwoosh had its own review of this turkey. And since November is traditionally turkey-eating month in the US, I’m throwing up this archive for Cyclops.

This figure isn’t a Turkey; Cyke’s got better figures that fall under that description, but this post-Phoenix-Force-5 costume and character version is. And yeah, it’s Bendis’s Fault, but we’ve dealt with that axe and ground it to a nub. I get new colors and trying to be all “modern,” but it’s just too much of a departure for me. From blue and yellow to black and red, it’s like changing the Fantastic Four costumes from blue and black/white to black and red. Oh wait. I get it — everyone in the Marvel Universe is bad so they have to have black and red costumes ’cause they are criminals. Or something ridiculous. And before the legions of Cyclops defenders jump down my throat, yeah, I am reading the comics, and I am not impressed. And if that makes me the bitter fanboy, then so be it.

After all, half of reviewing a figure is reviewing the character and the look that the figure is trying to represent. And this version of Cyke, in the comics, sucks. But the figure does not. It’s based on the Archangel base figure that we all know and love and think is the second coming since the Bullseye buck, and we are all correct in having this opinion. ‘Cause the figure is that good. It’s a great sculpt and perfect for a character like Cyclops.

The articulation does everything that you want it to, and we’ve poured soo much love for this articulation scheme and what it can do, it’s an old vinyl record that just won’t play anymore.

The figure comes with a new belt and two fists. I like the belt and it’s not as big and bulky as the other utility belts we’ve been seeing, so that’s cool. The fists are, well… at first I was like, “Why doesn’t Cyke have his pointy-fingers-to-the-temple hands?” ‘Cause that’s Cyke. But then I remembered this crappy version of Cyke in the comics has no control over his optic blasts, and every time he uses his powers he spazzes out and it seems to hurt him, making me realize that the pain causes him to put his fists to his head like I do when I have a head ache. Or maybe he’s punching himself in the head since he hates this version of himself.

Or maybe he’s punching himself in the head because he hates his mask. Oh, goodness. I’m not an admirer of this mask; the red “X” just doesn’t make sense to me. The execution of it on the toy is pretty cool — the “X” is done in clear plastic.

Should you get this figure? Dunno. I mean, the only reason to buy him is if you like this version of the costume or want to have an “era” relevant costume in your collection. Me, personally, I’m thinking custom fodder, so get him. It’s an all-black base figure with fists, so there’s gotta be ton of possibilities right there.

  1. I love this figure, I finally have a Racer X to go next to my Speed Racer. Just kidding. 😉

I kinda like the costume, I have no problems with the black and red. But, I do kinda miss the old mask and visor. I’m thinking about painting another head black and using that, instead. Not sure if I would have a gold visor or metallic red visor…?

  2. I have enjoyed the transformation of summers from boy scout to paramilitary soldier, and seems quite coherent as caracther evolution so far…but they are softening again…

  3. Me too. I’ve enjoyed the current storyline quite a bit. I didn’t know for sure about the costume initially, but it has definitely grown on me.

  4. I actually love this costume and this figure.

I prefer Cyke to be more of an outlaw with a mission than a boy scout headmaster.
