Ultimate Goblin was the Build-A-Figure (BAF) in the Marvel Legends Infinite Amazing Spider-Man Series this year. It’s an interesting choice for a BAF since this wasn’t the Green Goblin in the movie, and I don’t think collectors were begging for this hulked-out version of Green Goblin. We’ve covered Green Goblin figures before, like the ToyBiz Onlsaught Series version as well as the Marvel Select one, and this would be the most recent iteration.
Ultimate Goblin has his origins in the Ultimate Universe where he was Norman Osborne, and, like his 616 counterpart, he’s Spider-Man’s ultimate enemy. After injecting himself with the same serum that gave Ultimate Spidey his powers, he turned into a hulked-out monster. I never got behind the Ultimate Universe; I collected some of the issues, but it never really grabbed me. Why did Spider-Man’s nemesis need to be a Hulk rip-off? Where was the suit and the glider? Did we need another Hulk, or was this more of an Abomination?
The figure is a rehash of another Hulk — the Avengers Movie Hulk. There are some new gimmicks on the figure, like new forearms and shoulders that feature spikes and a new head. The figure also sports some add-on flames, which are really well done and cool to put on movie Hulk too. The articulation is the same as movie Hulk, and there are no changes to improve or worsen the range of motion.
I’ll be honest, there isn’t anything special about this figure. Unlike Blastaar, this is an uninspired reuse of an existing base. There is inspiration in that I keep thinking of how to use this figure as a custom base, maybe as an oversized Blue Devil or some kind of demon that can fit into my Four Horsemen lines. He might be a good demon to play against my future Figma Berserk figures.
You can still order this figure by buying a set at BigBadToyStore.
