Universal Monsters Select – Creature From The Black Lagoon

Diamond Select Universal Monsters Creature From The Black Lagoon Featured

This figure is so good that it’s convinced me that we don’t have enough aquatic characters in our toy collections.

Sure, there’s Namor, Aquaman, Mer-Man and his redeco in blue. Black Manta. And….? Has anyone ever had a figure submerged in a fish tank for any extended amount of time? That’s what the Universal Monsters Select Creature From The Black Lagoon makes me want to do, set up a fish tank to display him and whoever else I can think of who needs to be underwater.

Like I said in the Son of Frankenstein review, Diamond Select is knocking it out of the park with this line. Great sculpting, nice paint, and abundant articulation. The Creature is no exception. In fact, I think I like him even more than Frankenstein.

The sculpt is absolutely fantastic. There isn’t a spot I can look at and not see some tiny detail. Well, okay, maybe the top of his head, but you know what I mean. The bottom of the feet even has sculpted details. Amazing. And that praise goes for paint too. Nice colors and shading combined with a glossy look makes the Creature look wet and kind of nasty. Like any good Creature should look.

When I first picked this figure up at TRU I thought he was missing some points of articulation, mainly in the ankles, thighs, and biceps. I could see that the elbows were hinge and swivel so I wasn’t too worried there, but I was afraid the legs were going to be near statue-like. Nope, DST did an awesome job of hiding the swivels at the thigh and bicep, and the Creature even has rocker ankles although limited by the sculpt that effectively hides it. Here’s my video review breaking down the articulation.

And some close-ups of the hidden swivels.

This Toys R Us exclusive comes with a more simple base than the Diamond exclusive version, but I was surprised at how many paint app were incorporated into the little piece of beach.

Add all of that together and you get one hell of a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

Like I said before, I’m not a huge Universal Monsters fan, but I love great action figures. And value. $14.99 for this is plastic value we haven’t seen in a while. So go buy this. Now. Go.

  2. I saw him in TRU yesterday and had to get him. The hidden articulation on him is so incredibly well done! I don’t know where I’ll fit him in my collection, but he’s a must-have figure.

  3. Manphibian custom figure? Hmm…
