ThreeA Toys Review – WWRp JEA Bertie MK3

This bot is a monster! Being familiar with the Bertie MK2, which is one of smaller robots in the WWR/WWRp series, I was in no way expecting something this big when it showed up at my door.

It’s just a smidge larger than the Large Martin, which has enjoyed its status as the “big bot” in the WWR/WWRp series for some time now.  The MK3’s size is definitely impressive and it’s cool to add another big ‘bot to the shelves and to the growing JEA squad.

The MK3 is, of course, an upgrade of the Bertie MK2 and they share several design traits: a cylindrical torso, short legs, very long arms, and a plethora of bags and gear. The MK3 also shares all the articulation of his little brother and is able to achieve some nice, expressive poses with just its arms.  It reminds me a bit of both the MK2 and the Armstrong, mainly because of the “long” torso and low-set shoulders.

As mentioned previously, the MK3 comes with a lot of gear: five bags and a huge shotgun. I’m always in favor of any figure I buy coming with as much “stuff” as possible, but in this case some of the stuff can be a bit annoying. The bags hang on hooks and weigh next to nothing and are stuffed with some very lightweight material to help them maintain their shape. The result is five bags that tend to get in the way and will fall off with the slightest provocation. They are constantly falling off mine, anyway.  Perhaps a belt like the MK2 sports would have been a better solution.

The paint apps are in keeping with the ThreeA tradition: perfectly weathered to create the effect of a bot that has been through some hard times and is still kicking around like an old-time war veteran with plenty of stories and the ability to still kick some butt. All the rust, dirt, and grime look fantastically realistic.

Aside from the bags, my only other nit would be the shoulder joints – they protrude a bit too much and are too noticeable, particularly the very bright white left joint.  Something that would allow the shoulders to sit closer to the torso would be preferable, but then it’s very possible that articulation would be sacrificed, so perhaps what we have is the lesser of two evils. The good news is some dynamic posing can lessen the joints’ obtrusiveness.

Would I recommend this guy? Yeah, I would. He doesn’t feel as delicate as some of the other WWRp bots and the more I play around with him, the more I like him. I just wish the dang bags would stay in place. It’s cool to add a new bot to both the JEA ranks and to the WWRp collection in general and I’m anxious to see the MK3 released in more colorways.
