At last, because no one demanded it and because the show’s been over for a month already, here’s the San Diego Comic-Con Best in Show review, by your friendly neighborhood Fwoosh staff.
We had quite a bit of love for the upcoming Masters of the Universe Classics – Trapjaw.
MatthewK says:
My favorite MOTU character gets his due with a MOTUC figure. The Trapjaw headsculpt captures the wide-eyed crazy man look of the original figure but, in a way I can’t explain, makes it cooler. The harness is faithful to the original but adds some techno detail and highlights them with some judicious use of paint. I like that they incorporate a little bit of 200X design by adding the harness strap to his left shoulder.
If that wasn’t enough, he comes with a bonus arm and headsculpt to make Kronis – the man he was before he became Trap Jaw. The bonus headsculpt has this wonderfully ugly expression to his face. It’s almost as scary as the metal jaw look.
Ibentmyman-thing says:
I didn’t go to SDCC, but if I did, I somehow would have Trap Jaw with me now. I would have used ninjas and trained monkeys and old ladies with machine gun purses and cub scouts injected with rabies if I had to, but I’d be playing with him now. Everyone has that one figure in a line they want to see. Trap Jaw is mine for MotUC. He was the only 200x I bought, and I’ve been patiently awaiting his reveal…and he didn’t disappoint. He’s just like the old toy, with a few tweaks, and is exactly how I wanted him to look.
I would have been happy with just Trap Jaw alone…but the addition of an arm and extra head to make The man he was before becoming Trap Jaw is a genius move that assures an extra sale for me.

Industrial didn’t wax poetic but wants you to know he loves toys. He says:
I’m calling dibs on Bioshock…. I love writing about toys based on video games that I’ve never played…..

VeeBee went with the Animal Instinct 2-pack from DC Universe Classics. He says:
I hate this. There are three things that invariably come with going to SDCC every year that are a real pain: the crowds, the lines at booths and having to pick my favorite newly-revealed toy. There were a lot of things that were amazing, and yeah I am going to list my highlights before I go to my favorite (which was really hard to pick). Things of note were the MU Black Widow and Hawkeye figures, Adora, Battle Cat, Trapjaw (holy freakin’ crap! Kronis too!?!), April O’Neil, Brother Voodoo, Kilowog, Power Girl, Mossman, Robotman and Classic Steppenwolf were certainly the figures of note for me. The last three came ever so close to being my best in show choices.
However, the thing that got me more than anything was not a single figure (see how I am going to cheat here?) but a two pack. More specifically the DCUC “Animal Instincts” pack featuring Animal Man and B’wana Beast. Holy crap is everything about this set amazing. We have a lot of talented photogs hanging around these forums, but nothing, not one picture does that Animal Man head sculpt justice. Seriously. I had the same conversation with with about 7-8 people in front of that display case on separate occasions: that figure walked right out of a Brian Bolland cover. It is that good.
Did I mention B’wana Beast too? Yeah, I knew I did. Can you freakin’ believe that? B’wana Beast is going to be on my DCUC shelf before the end of the year! I LOVE characters like B’wana Beast for a couple of reasons in relation to toys- first for having the character himself, second for the amazing “wow” factor a figure like that will bring to the display. The DC Universe is going deep. We are starting to see a pattern here with the likes of this set, Gentleman Ghost and Killer Moth and I would like to thank Mattel Designer Bill Benecke for this particular little brainchild of his – keep ’em coming!
So yeah, the “Animal Instincts” set is my best in show. It *almost* makes up for hearing the story about what happened to my Mark Moonrider figure, but that is a story for another time (or interview). Don’t worry, I will continue to hold out hope.

craarl loved the Marvel Universe Secret Wars Ultron, but couldn’t stay focused. He says:
My favorite figure of the show was MU Ultron. That figure looks perfect, nothing much else to say, the sculpt was perfect the paint was perfect the pose in the case was perfect. It is a little wince worthy, do to the lack of an iconic Marvel Legends version, but I’m pretty happy with his inclusion anyway. Marvel Universe doesn’t quite give me goosebumps on the level of excitement I used to get upon seeing new Marvel Legends product. But they are certainly making inroads to that with me. Progress is progress and that figure looks damn good, lets hope the production can match the sample that was shown. Honorable mention in that department goes to MU modern Thor and the teaser Juggernaut we saw. I was also crazy excited for the DCUC Steppenwolf (the green variation) as well as the C&C Imperiex.
As far as figures I got to see but probably won’t ever own, of course there was Battle Cat. I don’t buy MOTUC but if I was going to buy anything that would be it. I don’t even know what I would do with a figure like that, he does have the unique distinction of making me wish I was actually 6″ tall, but alas my wallet is fickle. Kudos to the 4H and Guru all the same, that is a beautiful toy. Then on top of that the Square Enix Resident Evil 5 Chris Redfield was also really impressive in person. I missed out on the NECA version of Chris up until now, so that factored into me giving this one the 2nd look. I secretly hope for them to release a gaggle of zombies in similar fashion.

Robokillah has totally abandoned his heritage and picked the DC Universe Classics Kilowog C&C. He says:
Going to be predictable here. I’m looking through Con pictures and it keeps coming back to this guy…
Maybe it’s because I’m knee deep in Blackest Night, or it’s the fact that I’ve been lusting after the DCD version for a long time, but Kilowog is best of show for me. From the head/neck sculpt to the huge ring on his finger he calls out “Buy me. Assemble me. Fly me around the room before placing me on your shelf.” I can’t help it.

Finally, I retained my Marvel whore card and picked the Marvel Universe Gigantic Battles (?) Galactus. I say:
Yes, I know we’ve already had a Build-a-Figure Galactus from Toy Biz, but best in show for me is the Galactus that the Hasbro Marvel team pulled out from under the table during their panel presentation. First of all, it’s massive. At a reported 19 inches, it will make the BAF Galactus seem small. It helps that this Galactus is also pretty thick. Check out your BAF again – and start thinking of him as Galactus’s little brother, Skinny G.
Second, it’s got a lot of extra detail. The head has extra “knobs” that might be inspired by the 3-D renders of the hungry one in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game. There’s also more detail on the gloves and boots. And there’s lots of extra piping all over the figure, including the helmet fins.
Finally, it’ll have electronics – lights and sounds. Yes, I know that I’m not supposed to like action features on my toys, but I can’t wait to see what lights up on this beast. I’m dying to know if he’ll be saying stuff like “I HUNGER” or make munching sounds while he eats planet Earth.
If this Galactus makes it to shelves, it’ll be one of the coolest Marvel toys ever – from Hasbro or Toy Biz. Yes, I know.
